What a difference a day makes...and the difference is you.

"What motivates you?" That was a question I was asked recently in an interview for a promotion. In all honesty, I answered, a sense of purpose, hope for the future, making a difference and knowing that what I do matters.

Outside of my career, in my personal life... the very same things motivate me. We live in a cynical world, and in a world with billions of people, what does one life mean but just a single drop in a vast ocean... or just a tiny speck in the grand scale of things? It's relatively easy to get lost in the crowd... But what drives me is knowing that my life matters.

Photography gave me that sense of purpose, it gave me something to do and something to look forward to. I decided to pursue this hobby as a distraction at a time when I was so tempted to wallow in self-pity, indignation and frustration over situations and things that I can't have. To quote a wise philosopher of our time, Mick Jagger once wrote... "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might find, you get what you need."

Until now, I didn't realize that outside of my class, circle of friends and acquaintances, that there are actually people that read and visit my blog. Well, aloha to all of you : ) and mahalo (thank you) for reading. Feel free to say hi. I would love to hear what you think!

Well, here are some pictures of Coconut Island in Hilo from this past weekend...

Day and night...

Night and day...

Taken with my iPhone 4 camera... Filter mania? There's an app for that!

With the end of Spring semester 2011, I feel nostalgic, I've come to find the structure of project deadlines comforting somehow... Maybe it's time to move on and think of other personal photography projects... Maybe I can do "Project 365", where I take 1 picture each day to capture what that day was like, and if that is too easy... maybe something along the lines of "100 Strangers" where I approach, talk to and take pictures of strangers wherever my (somewhat geographically limited) travels take me... That can be somewhat more challenging... What do you think?
